The foregoing model's fixation with ovals, ovals, ovals is replaced by an attractive contemporary appearance that confidently leads the way to ford's future. but the 2000 taurus is more than just a styling exercise. Upgraded powertrains provide vigorous response. Its handling, while suitably smooth and comfortable, delivers a sporting crispness that will satisfy even the aspiring formula 1 driver in the family. The new taurus cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. The upscale svg includes anti-lock braking (abs), power driver's seat, 60/40 split fold-down rear seat and dual lighted vanity mirrors. The se comfort adds to this machined five-spoke alloy wheels, leather seating and electronic automatic climate control. But this new model has a more muscular, forceful appearance that sets it apart from earlier renderings. The grille is slightly broader and more aggressive looking than before. The headlights are larger and produce 25-percent brighter low beams, 20-percent brighter high beams. The new car's flanks have handsomely modeled character lines, and the rear bears a resemblance to the mildly controversial stern of the jaguar s-type, applauded by some, found ponderous by others. The new model allows nearly an inch more headroom for front-seat passengers and nearly two inches more headroom in the rear. The rear decklid is higher than before as well, producing 1. 2 additional cubic feet of trunk cargo capacity - 17. 0 cu. The roomy se wagon, with its rear seat down, has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cu. With the seat up. under the hood, the standard engine in all models except the se comfort sedan is the 12-valve 3. 0-liter vulcan v6, generating 155 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 185 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. The se comfort is furnished with the high-output, 24-valve 3. 0-liter duratec v6, which delivers 200 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 200 foot-pounds of torque at 4500 rpm. The taurus's well-publicized adjustable pedals make possible a comfortable driving position for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter leather-wrapped steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. Buttons for manipulating the cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel and are easy to operate. The highly legible dashboard gauges, which include an analog speedometer and tachometer, are white-on-black. A single stalk on the left of the steering column operates the washer and wipers and the bright/dim control for the headlights. The power window automatic-down circuit operates the driver's-side window only, and there is no automatic-up. On the dashboard just below the tachometer is an on/off switch for the se's traction control, useful when driving with chains and/or in snow. the central console containing audio and (hvac) heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls is an intimidating sea of similar-looking push-buttons and toggle switches. While elsewhere the taurus is ergonomically first rate, operating the controls on this panel requires very careful reading of the various closely spaced buttons. Among the audio controls, only the volume control is a radial knob--it would be more convenient to have the station-tuner a radial knob as well. The removable six-cd changer cassette was cleverly concealed in the center console at the driver's right elbow. This is far more convenient than the remote 12-cd changers commonly hidden in the trunk of other cars. Opening the sunroof required only one touch of the button, whereupon it opened automatically. The cushions and seatbacks are not cushy, but firm seats are usually best on long drives. Each of the se comfort's lighted vanity mirrors in the two front visors features a rheostat for regulating their brightness, a novel touch. the roomy rear three-place seating includes two semi-buckets and a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. An hvac duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se svg and se comfort, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items. The trunk is of generous size and contains the taurus' mini-spare tire. driving impressionwhile the 2000 taurus is rich with interesting features, no list of hardware can sum up this car's greatest strength--its behavior on the road. In the past, the driving manners of the taurus have been utilitarian; it did everything competently but without cause for excitement. And surely, the base lx model maintains that familiar marketing position. After all, ford has had no trouble selling huge numbers of this sedan. but the 2000 se comfort we tested has an excitingly new personality. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. As a family sedan, the se comfort's gas-pressurized shock absorbers provide a smooth, impact-free ride. Yet when pushed in the corners, the comfort proves stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road-information alerts every step of the way. Braking performance was much smoother than that of the dodge intrepid. we hate to say it, but in se comfort form, this 2000 taurus family sedan comes uncomfortably close to being a very good mass-produced sports sedan. summarythe 2000 ford taurus is a vastly improved, competent--even exciting--family sedan. The 2010 taurus is impressive, well-equipped and extremely competent, a charismatic full-size sedan that could establish ford as america's premier auto manufacturer. The 2010 ford taurus comes with a duratec v6, delivering a generous 263 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. also redesigned is the high-performance 2010 taurus sho, with a twin-turbocharged ecoboost v6 rated at a breathtaking 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The sho, which stands for super high output, delivers enough power and cornering poise to leave pricier audi and lexus models coughing in the dust. dramatically different and advanced in comparison with the mildly pleasing previous version, the 2010 taurus models offer brisk performance, precise and reassuring handling, lavish comfort, and a comprehensive occupant-safety package. The taurus and taurus sho are the flagships of ford's entire line. And since, at long last, sedans are once again outselling trucks nationally, ford has every reason to be optimistic about the taurus's role in ford's future. we found the taurus to be a responsive, comfortable, and protective family sedan, whether in se, sel or limited trim. But this car is far more than a dull, utilitarian appliance. ford refers to taurus's world-car styling as emotive and bold. Its looks have magnetism and a sleekly contemporary appearance designed to win owners who take seriously how they appear to the outside world. Judged on price alone, this is no luxury car. Yet its visual impact will go a long way toward making its occupants feel very good about themselves. This is a car to be seen in. in the case of the taurus, great looks don't prevent preclude brainpower. The taurus is packed with innovative technology and electronics, beneficial driver-assistance provisions, and safety packages that outstrip import sedans costing half again more. Among these packages are comprehensive warning systems programmed to warn of obstacles front, side and rear, a boon in crowded parking lots. A brilliant adaptive cruise control system lets the driver relax on the highway, while it automatically controls the gap to the car ahead. Beyond the new technology, impressive as it is, it will still be the car's over-the-road driving character that determines its ultimate worth. we drove both the taurus and taurus sho along a lengthy route of highways, then put in a demanding day in the twisty hill country of tennessee. All-wheel drive is available. walkaroundthe new taurus is a thoroughly american design, yet it owes almost nothing to the long, ponderous line of over-styled american sedans of the past. Its styling is exciting and chic, more than a match for any foreign competitors in its price class or even for competitors that cost a good deal more. Even in its most mundane models, it has an aggressive, ready-to-go demeanor. the signature three-bar grille on the taurus wraps around to sleek, swept-back headlamp complexes. The expression on this car's face is a wry glint that says, this car knows what it's doing. the side panels are muscular and handsomely sculpted, while the side profile shows a distant similarity to the currently fashionable audi family. The only peculiarity is the odd bullet-head of chrome on the front fender sides just ahead of the front-door cut. Isolated where it is, it's a tic that ford styling could do without. at the rear, the car's lines feature another pair of sleek lamp complexes, tied together with a gleaming horizontal chrome strip. In the limited and sho versions, big 19-inch wheels and tires give the taurus a resolutely competitive look. a key element of the sho formula is the subtlety of its unique exterior design cues. The sho is distinguished from other taurus models by special wheels, decklid spoiler, twin exhaust tips, unique grille work and unique parking lamp bezels. interiorinside, the new ford taurus is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. The dashboard takes an unusual form. Its upper surface is a broad, downward-curving shape that behaves almost like a sunshade over the dash's cascade of equipment and gauges. The gauges have a fresh, modern look, and all instrument lights are fully lit at all times. This is important, because so many cars dim their instruments in daylight, enough so that in high sun, the gauges and readouts are unreadable. For this bright decision, give ford an a-plus. the taurus paddle shifters are based on the bmw paradigm, with shifters on both sides of the wheel, a pull of the forefinger granting an upshift and a push of the thumb yielding a downshift. The six-speed transmission, present in all models, works remarkably well, especially in the sho, which is spec-ed to provide still-faster gear changes than the normal taurus. However, this writer prefers the ferrari paradigm, where the paddle on one side of the wheel summons an upshift, and downshifts are summoned at the opposite side of the wheel. This is simpler and more intuitive. This full range of technologies is offered in no other family sedan within the taurus price range. the seats are lavishly comfortable, with one exception: in order to achieve its full five-star rating in crash protection, which it successfully did, the front seat headres. The upscale se dropped $1080 to $18,995, while the se wagon is down $1840 to $19,995. It was the best-selling car in the u. From 1992 to 1996 and more than 357,000 were sold last year. The taurus is popular in rental car fleets. And in just one year it has assumed a starring role on the booming nascar winston cup circuit. walkaroundmost people either like the styling of the taurus or they don't. The current model makes a bolder design statement than the previous generation. The theme is oval inside and out. both lx and se come standard with the vulcan 3. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 145 horsepower. Optional for both is a double overhead-cam, 32-valve, 3. 0-liter duratec v6 that makes 185 hp. (the $29,550 taurus sho comes with a 235-horsepower 3. 4-liter dohc v8. Shift quality was a persistent criticism of first-year editions of this latest-generation taurus, so ford recalibrated the computer controls changed the torque converter and used a different final-drive ratio. The result is smoother, more efficient shifting. The more powerful duratec engine comes with a higher stall-speed torque converter to allow it to rev more quickly to its most efficient operating range. This combines with a numerically higher axle ratio to produce quicker off-the-line acceleration. it has taken detroit a while to come to parity with the europeans and japanese in the suspension department, and the taurus is a good example of getting it right. The front suspension is a macpherson strut design with a lower control arm and stabilizer bar. The advantage is a more precisely positioned suspension to maximize handling and response. There are disc brakes in front with drum brakes at the rear. The wagon and the sho get rear discs. Abs is optional on the wagon, standard on the sho. interiorthe exterior oval theme is picked up inside on the instrument panel, vents and door handle recesses. But give it some time. In an era when most instrument panels all seem to look alike, the one in the taurus is a refreshingly distinctive change. It is especially distinctive when compared to the generic instrument panels on the honda accord and toyota camry. And the taurus interior is more attractive and is of a higher quality than the chevy malibu. the instrument panel is also well organized. The buttons and switches run from lower left to upper right within the oval for a double visual shock, but the arrangement is quite logical; it doesn't take long for a driver to make adjustments by touch alone without taking attention away from the road. The buttons and switches have a high-quality, high-tech feel. bucket seats are standard on all models with a floor-mounted shifter. An optional front bench seat is available with a three-way flip-fold console seat. The center portion can be used as a seating position, with its own safety belt, or it can be flipped forward to become an armrest, or it can be folded open once more to reveal storage compartments for cups, tapes and coins. We found the center space too small for even small people. But for organizing the small items that get scattered around in a family car, this is an exceptionally inventive piece of design work. This year things are simpler, though it's still sometimes confusing which items are standard and which are optional. But the current generation taurus - now in its third season - is a leap ahead of the old one. that leap started with one of the best chassis in the midsize class. A well-engineered chassis allows the suspension to perform well, keeping the car flat in corners and sopping up bumps and bangs. The taurus handles well, though it feels bigger and heavier than a camry, accord or malibu. while the overhead-valve vulcan v6 provides adequate performance, the best choice is the double overhead-cam duratec. Smooth, quiet and responsive, ford's duratec engine feels good launching off the line. The additional power makes merging and passing quicker and safer. Although general seating comfort is good, we found the optional bench seat marginal in terms of lateral support. Reducing the model count makes the buying experience easier. the taurus faces strong rivals in 1999, particularly from its perennial nemesis, the honda accord, which was redesigned last year. Add to that a strong charge from the recently redesigned toyota camry. Pricing and performance of the three are basically on a par.
